    It's that time again!
    JBP Cheesecake Contest

Vote now in Java's Bachelor Pad Cheesecake Contest!

This contest is the big one, so everyone go vote! ^_^ (Where is Diddy when I need him?) You can only vote once, and you vote in the "Polls" section of the yahoogroup. Go check out all the girls, and then vote for me, Betty Valentine! (J/K maybe sorta not really). ^_^ And tell all your friends!

Oh, also: While I am pretty much totally safe for work, I cannot guarantee the same of other girls. So if you go digging around in the photo archives, you may find some NSFW pictures.

Oh, and here is a link to the contest info page with clip pictures of all the girls:

More pics of everyone are in the yahoogroup!

As an editor and art director, I am starting to notice a peculiar trend in submissions and such things. An "artistic style" is like power. If you have to say you've got it, you don't.

I'm getting sick of the phrase "artistic style" since it seems to be the latest hack-crib for excusing suckage. A part of me longs to tell people that if they have to explain why something looks or reads like it does, there is a problem with the way it looks or reads.

    I blame the internet.

There is a new Broadway musical called "Lestat". The commercials lead me to believe that it is being handled a thousand times worse than you thought it could be. (Which is always a problem because I was thinking pretty bad things.) I'm having an emotional issue with it, though, because the music is done by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Can the awesome that is their music counterbalance the terrible that is the idea of a musical version of Lestat? I suppose only time will tell. (Did I mention that the commercials involve a guy that looks like Austin Scarlett wearing a lacy ascot and a red smoking jacket while typing on a giant ibook and making The Rock's face at the camera?)

(Oh... musicals. I remember when we did the A Clockwork Orange musical. And Carrie: The Musical. "Sorrow is the Kool-Aid of human emotion.")

Yay! the 40s suit I just bought off of ebay arrived today. Following the numbers on the auction, I was expecting to have to take about 3" out of the bust and 4 out of the wiast of the jacket. When I tried it today I realized that it fits just about perfectly. I'm going to lop about 2" out of the center back but just at the waist. It was v. lucky. (I checked all my measurements. I did not do any growing.)

Now I just need to find a hat to go with it for the shoot on Saturday and it should be all good.

Career paths for liberal arts majors
The lovely and buxom Fraulein Von Trapp and I have entered into a pact to join the roller derby together. I suspect she will be an excellent blocker some day. I think I may be the suckiest blocker ever because I am little and wobbly and not allowed to bite. We are just training now (for values of training which equal "shopping for roller skates") because we missed the tryouts this year due to waffling. (No, seriously. I got this fabulous iron for my birthday and it makes only waffles shaped like circus things. My crewmembers each lost months of their lives to those waffles. (I had no idea that waffle clowns and giraffes could be put into such compromising positions.))

Dear wonderful promoters of interesting events: Please post your fliers earlier! When you post a flier after midnight the day before your event, chances are I will not see it until your event is in progress. Then I will sit on my giant couch thinking "Aw hell, I would have liked to have gone to that event and bought drinks and tipped generously, but now I am stuck on my giant couch bitching at strangers on the internet." (It's not pretty.) Even if I do see it, by that point I probably have plans for whenever your event is! Really, it would be ever so much more convenient for all concerned (by which I mean me) if all fliers for interesting NY shows were posted around 2 or 3 days before the event is to occur. That at least gives me time to get an outfit together.

    Cats eat eyes
Today was half a mail day. I received a nice bag of prize swag and a letter that said I may already have won 10 million dollars. I also finally got the set of 18mm acrylic taxidermy eyes I bought a few weeks ago. They looked great and I set them aside to use tomorrow, but Rocket found them and started playing with them and now I can find them nowhere. I think they are probably under the couch, and I just don't go down there.

Home again, home again, jiggidy jig.
Back in NY again, and it is ever so awesome to be home! ^_^ Most of my clothes will be arriving via giant brown box, so I can ignore the suitcases for now.

The house is rather dirty after two weeks of bachelor house sitting and fluffy cat. (she's a low-shedding short hair yet she left a giant extra cat in the middle of the bed. Puffy fluffy cat!) Our long lost furniture will be arriving next week, so I get to be all handy. Maybe I should dress up as Rosie the Riveter and arrange a photo shoot of me putting the bed together. (This is a cunning ploy in which the photographer and stylist will feel bad for me and assemble the damned giant thing for me.)

In fact I am feeling very Martha Stewart. This is largely because I stole a copy of Living from my Mother in Law's bathroom. It has an article on finishing furniture with wax and it looks really cool, so I think I will try it out on one of the naked dressers that is showing up. (I can only paint one like that because the other belongs to the boy and he wants his painted to look like a Transformer. I pity the Transformer that turns into a 3' tall dresser.)

I'm very glad that a new bookshelf will be coming, but I think I should have ordered a couple extra. I would like one for keeping my wigs on, and another for storing shoes.

    I need a bigger apartment.

Last night I had a dream that I was playing checkers with Jen Dziura's (http://www.jenisfamous.com) cat. Except every time I took a piece it would pee on the floor, so I just started letting it win.

I am really loathe to admit this because there are friends out there who have something to say about what this dream says about me as a person, and I really don't think I want to know what that says about me. (I am a talented person without drive to succeed? I am diffident towards others? Cat pee is my kryptonite?)

This morning we hit a high point of Chicago: The Orange breakfast. Orange is "The hippest breakfast in Chicago." And it really is. It is so hip it could be a Japanese pop star. It is so hip I should not be allowed in the same room with it, but like all hip things it will tolerate my presence so long as I hand over a credit card. (Speaking of... last night I took a burlesque class with teasing phenom Michelle "Toots" L'amour.)

I have another shoot tomorrow. Perhaps I should not have prepped for said shoot with a bottle and a half of red wine and a biiiig pot of risotto. Urgh.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    Surnames are *so* last season
I remember when it was the big trend for all the fashion models to go by single names, but when did artists jump on the band wagon? They aren't just adopting chic noms des plumes for the sake of Glamour, either. They're picking up charming little sobriquets like Neckface and Thundercut. I only just registered www.bettyvalentine.com, and now it looks like I have to become Babyfoot or Lightningboom just to keep up with the times! Le sigh.

Tuesday, December 6, Nick and I went to Jen's (of jenisfamous.com) birthday spectacular at CBGB's. It was a great time. I picked up a runner-up prize in the best-dressed contest that didn't really happen. It very nearly didn't happen. Nick came to pick me up at home that evening and found me sitting naked in front of a sewing machine surrounded by polka dot fabric. I made a cute swishy little green dress and a lace shrug to wear to the party. Turned out the fabric matched my little green snood perfectly. Hooray for matchy goodness!

[info]dangerdame is officially my favorite burlesque dancer. She's got more stage presence than you can shake a stick at.

My website is in the works. I'm so happy that I managed to get super-brilliant artist/musician [info]nonemorecomic to do my flash intro and some of the graphic design. Scholar/technowizard [info]nvogt is doing all the interior coding. When it is done Betty will have the Best Website There Is.

In other news, my favorite pair of vaguely retro platforms finally kicked it. It's a travesty. They were my favorite shoes since high school. Nothing ever made my legs look as good. To end on a positive note: The death of my strappy platforms meant that I had to wear some knee-high leather boots with my little dress, which saved my toes from freezing off and saved me from having to kick complete strangers in the face.

    I hate my Livejournal.
Enter Blog #3, this change was brought about because my mother called me on the phone this weekend to say that I was never going to make it as Fatwetdog the Pin-up Girl.

Apparently I have to cut it as a "lady". She hasn't seen me in drag lately, but I promised to behave.

I've been very bad lately. The last event I went to was Viva Van Story's exhibit at CBGB's on Oct. 28. I took all the boys and let them loose to pick up new pin-up girls. They came home empty-handed, but by no fault of mine. I told one of them to just go find the prettiest girl in the room and compliment her hair/clothes/maquillage. Two of them went after Viva herself. Poor babies. Another tried to pick up a pretty redhead in emo glasses and the same giant hairflower Viva was wearing. He had little hearts over his head by the end of the conversation, but she turned him down in the end for being too young for her. (I must say, if that lady was too old for J, I want to know what face cream she's using! She didn't look a day over 25.) Still, there was burlesque to be had and fabulous art on the wall. I think I am in love with Tyson McAdoo.

I did my job and picked up some cards while I was there. Sneaky Betty! ^_^ I got my CDs back from the first shoot today and I quite like them. I haven't yet looked through them all, but here is a preview: Read more... )
